#Divine Gifts in the Last Ten Days of Ramadan

We are in a month of munificent goodness, great righteousness and abundant blessings. It is praised abundantly in the Noble Book of Allaah The Almighty and the Hadeeths of His Messenger,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). It is the month of the Quran and goodness, and the month when people return to their Lord in a unique and matchless manifestation of faith.

This month is granted a privilege that is not granted to any other month, which is ten blessed days – the last ten days when Allaah The Almighty sends His bounty upon His slaves by saving them from Hell. Thus, we should make the best use of them by means of the following:
- Observing I’tikaaf (staying in seclusion for worship) in one of the two Holy Mosques or any other mosque if you cannot observe I’tikaaf in the two Holy Mosques. I’tikaaf is very important for those who devote themselves to the Lord and get rid of many endless worldly engagements. When someone observes I’tikaaf, he refrains from many issues in which he usually indulges. This is witnessed and widely known. If one cannot observe complete I’tikaaf, he should stay in one of the two mosques or spend long hours in it or in any other mosque.
- Reviving all or most of the night by prayers and Thikr (remembrance of Allaah The Almighty). With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), used to keep his family awake for the prayers, pray all night and tighten his waist belt (i.e. did not approach women). Praying at night is a great opportunity for whoever is engaged in worldly affairs –the majority of people– and cannot perform Qiyaam (voluntary night prayer); so the least thing people can offer in the last ten days of Ramadan is increasing Qiyaam and reviving the night. It is very strange that some righteous people are in one of the two Holy Mosques but they do not pray except eight Rak‘ahs (units of prayer) depending upon some proofs. They have forgotten that the Companions and the predecessors performed long prayers with many Rak‘ahs and they were the first generation which knew Islam and applied its rulings in the best way. The state of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), was known to them, along with the interpretation and understanding of his noble Hadeeths in the nearest possible meanings and the best interpretations.
- We should not forget that the last ten days include a night that is the greatest night in the whole year namely the Night of Al-Qadr (Night of Divine Decree), which is better than a thousand months. How great is this divine bounty! The one who wastes it has wasted something great. The majority of Muslim scholars agree that this night is one of the odd nights in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Some scholars adopt the opinion that it is the night of the twenty-seventh day. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him swore that it is the night of the twenty-seventh day as mentioned in Saheeh Muslim.
- Increasing reading, reflecting on and understanding the Quran along with increasing Thikr. There is no doubt that these days are the right time for this.
- It is very strange that in spite of the great virtues and ample rewards, some people like to spend their vacations that coincide with the last ten days, abroad. Hence, they are deprived of great benefits. What they will do abroad except spending their time in picnics and recreation at a time when recreation is pointless? Rather, this time should be devoted to worship. A wise person is he who directs his capacities and time to benefit the most from these days of happiness.
- We should not forget in these ten days that we have brothers in the trenches of Jihaad (striving in the cause of Allaah The Almighty). The enemies have surrounded them and they are suffering from great calamities. We should not forget them, even if the least we can do is to make sincere supplication from a heart devoted to Allaah The Exalted and charity. In this way, we will be the first to win its reward. Lastly, we should not forget the poor and the needy, especially when ‘Eed is approaching.

A summarised Fiqh of I‘tikaaf

In the Name of Allaah The Most Merciful The Bestower or Mercy

This is a brief account on the Fiqh (jurisprudence) of I‘tikaaf (seclusion in the mosque) which I have embarked upon with an introduction and clarification.

As for the introduction, then it is known that the last ten days of Ramadan represent the best time for practicing I‘tikaaf. What follows is a quick summary including the most prominent issues related to I‘tikaaf without tackling any scholarly differences of opinion. I shall mention some of the issues over which there is consensus among scholars, although most of the issues that I will mention cause a wide divergence of opinion among them. Regarding the last type of issue, I will refer to what seems preponderant to me in light of the Fatwas (vedicts) that were issued by the earlier as well as the latter day scholars and this is simply the result of my Ijtihaad (scholarly exertion) and I ask Allaah The Almighty to grant me the reward of this Ijtihaad.

I will also touch on the fruits of I‘tikaaf and its wisdom because Muslim jurists have paid great attention to questions on the ruling of I‘tikaaf and on some of its relevant issues like, for instance, whether the person in I‘tikaaf is permitted to go out of the mosque or not, and what if he partially goes out? Would that invalidate his I‘tikaaf? These are important questions, but the most important question is why we practice I‘tikaaf.

Pardon and Forgiveness in Ramadan

Pardon means treating the evil doer and those who are mistaken with tolerance and forgiveness, and not punishing him or treating him in the same way he did.

Pardon is one of the Attributes of Allaah The Almighty and a feature of His methodology. Allaah The Almighty describes Himself as "Ever Pardoning and Forgiving", "Pardons much," and "Pardons misdeeds." Allaah The Almighty shows unique pardon in the month of Ramadan, as He The Almighty Says (what means): {Allaah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you.} [Quran 2:187] In Ramadan, ‘Aa'ishah  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  her asked the Messenger of Allaah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), "If I get to know the Night of Al-Qadr, what should I say in it?" He instructed her to say: "Allaahumma innaka ‘Afuwwun tuhibbu al-‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni (O Allaah, Who pardons and loves pardoning! Pardon me.)" [At-Tirmithi: Saheeh]
Allaah The Almighty is characterized by pardoning, He pardons very often and pardons much, and loves that His slaves ask for and seek pardon from Him. He also loves that His slaves pardon one another and adopt the quality of pardoning among themselves. Allaah The Almighty talks to us about pardoning and urges us to adopt it in many ways and many verses in His Glorious Book. For instance, Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And to forego it is nearer to righteousness. And do not forget graciousness between you.} [Quran 2:237]
If a Muslim wants to attain piety and reach the level of the pious, let him follow the way of pardoning and adopt the quality of pardoning.
The verse alerts that pardoning requires that the person remembers the good characteristics and virtues of the one who makes a mistake. A fault or a mistake should not rescind or cancel people's virtues and good deeds; rather, these good deeds and virtues must cover their mistakes and faults. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds.} [Quran 11:114] So, you have to pardon and should not forget graciousness between you.
The verses which urge us to adopt pardoning include what Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense - indeed, Allaah is ever Pardoning and Competent.}[Quran 4:149] Allaah The Almighty attracts us by the quality of pardoning since He Himself is ever Pardoning and Competent. He has absolute power, and nothing fails Him. He fears neither the criticism of a critic nor the revenge of an avenger. If He punishes someone, He would punish him with full justice and wisdom. Nevertheless, He pardons much and does not punish unless pardoning proves to be ineffective.
This means that the human being, who is weak when compared to others, stands in need of others, and is liable to get angry or behave unjustly, is the one who needs the quality of pardoning and to deal with others on the basis of clemency.
Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):
{But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allaah is Forgiving and Merciful.} [Quran 64:14]
{And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allaah should forgive you?} [Quran 24:22]
These two verses provide another reason why people should pardon one another; since they love that Allaah The Almighty pardons them and that they themselves benefit from His pardon and that of people, they should pardon and forgive people. In other words, we should pardon people as we seek pardon for ourselves and our mistakes.
Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And who restrain anger and who pardon the people.} [Quran 3:134] This verse calls for a unique level of pardon, which is, pardoning at the moment of anger and agitation. This is a rank that is very high and difficult to attain. When people incline to pardoning and forgiveness, they usually do it when they are relaxed and calm, which is probably preceded by an angry reaction. Therefore, Allaah The Almighty gives special praise to those who restrain anger and pardon people. They pardon while in the state of anger, nervousness, and pain resulting from the harm that befalls them. In this sense, the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Real patience is that which is showed at the first stroke of grief,"and he said: "The strong man is not one who is good at wrestling, but the strong man is the one who controls himself in a fit of rage." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Such was the manner of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) and the prophets before him. Ibn Mas‘ood  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him said, "I can still recall as if I am seeing the Messenger of Allaah  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) resembling one of the prophets whose people scourged him and shed his blood, while he wiped blood from his face, he said: 'O Allaah! Forgive my people for they do not know.'"[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Setting goals for Ramadan

Goals are our anchors. “Goal-less” people drift aimlessly, without direction or destination in mind. The change in daily routine that Ramadan brings makes the month an opportune time to set goals for (and begin) self-improvement.

The ultimate and underlying goal of every believer should be to meet Allaah, pleased and well pleasing. The mini-goals we set to accomplish this life mission of ours must cover all the different dimensions of our lives. Balance between our physical, spiritual, and creative components is the key to attaining true happiness in this life and the next.

This spiritual element is at the core of the others (as demonstrated to us by Prophet Ibraheem  may  Allaah  exalt  his  mention). If we sincerely pursue the fulfillment of our spiritual lives, Allaah The Most High promises to facilitate the other aspects of our wellbeing.

Moreover, we must begin with what is obligatory and not the supererogatory.

That said, we are practical beings, nonetheless, and must set and attain sensible goals. It is the small and consistent deeds that carry us to great ends. In the mundane, we often find the seeds of transcendent truth and everlasting success. So grows the great import in setting these tedious and ordinary goals. In your planning, be sure to make those goals smart (sensible, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely).

Settle your accounts before the final accounting

Heedlessness of the Day of Judgment can lead to carelessness in accounting for one's wealth. We very easily may become consumed by the desire to gain more to the point of neglecting our other responsibilities. Financial ambition can (and has) led many a devout Muslim to place work and lifestyle over worship. We should first and foremost pray as the Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) did: "O our Lord! Make us content with whatever you provide.”

And so our financial objectives in this life should complement our ultimate goal of pleasing Allaah. Know that you will be asked two questions concerning your wealth on the Day of Judgment: (1) How you earned your wealth, and (2) how you spent it.

With that in mind, consider these financial tips this Ramadan:

1. If your earning is from a Haraam source, then your first goal should be to quit that immediately—or start working toward giving it up and cleaning your wealth from it. The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “How excellent the wealth of the Muslim is, if it is collected through legal means and is spent in Allaah's cause and on orphans, the poor, and wayfarers. But he who does not take it legally is like an eater who is never satisfied. Thus his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection” [Al-Bukhaari].

2. If your source of earning is Halaal, then focus on purifying your wealth by fulfilling any obligations you may have concerning Zakaah.

3. Next, maximize your savings for the Hereafter by spending your wealth for the sake of Allaah in Ramadan. The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) was the most generous of us all. Yet his generosity increased even more before and during the month of Ramadan.

Social goals

Muslims should be sincere in their dealings with others and strive not to harm them. We are exhorted to be quick to forgive when wronged and must love for others what they love for themselves. Allaah, The Just, on the Day of Judgment, will not forgive a harm done by someone to another until and unless that person seeks forgiveness from the one he/she has harmed or the harmed one is compensated for the wrong done to them by the one who harmed him/her.

Keep the following in mind as you set goals for your social life in Ramadan:

1. Forgive those who harmed you in any way, even if you were right (meaning, hold no grudges).
2. Hearts become softer in Ramadan. It's a good time to repair damaged relationships. Allaah Says what means: “The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allaah that you may receive mercy.” [Quran 49:10].

3. Ramadan events provide excellent opportunities to mend (and start) relationships. Invite friends and family who you've fallen-out with for an Iftaar at your home. Have Iftaars for neighbors and others you would like to connect with.

4. Spend more time with your family. Take your family to the Mosque on a daily basis for Iftaar and for the Taraweeh prayer.

Physical goals

Our bodies are a trust from Allaah (as are our time and wealth). We are accountable for what we do with our bodies and how we maintain them. Our own body parts will either testify for or against us on the Day of Judgment. We will also be questioned as to what we have consumed to sustain our bodies.
Health is important. Check these suggestions out:

1. Control what you eat. Our food must be Halaal. The quality must be wholesome. The quantity must be moderate. As your eating habits inch closer to these ideals, you will become healthier, both physically and emotionally.
2. Purify your body parts by pulling them away from prohibited acts and engaging them in God-pleasing acts.
a. If your tongue is occupied in gossip, cease this and occupy your tongue in Thikr (remembering and supplicating Allaah).
b. If your hands are used to manipulate scantily clad characters in a video game, then busy them with helping someone out.
c. If your ears are absorbed in music, then change the tune: Start listening to and reciting Quran more.

Ramadan contains its own motivational energy, free for all to access. Take advantage. Remember, the obligatory duties are priority. And goal number one should be to maintain those duties throughout the year, not just in Ramadan. Be balanced, as well. 'Umar Ibn Al-Khattab  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him said: "Audit yourselves before being audited,” meaning by Allaah on Judgment Day. Use this blessed month to step back, evaluate yourself, and reset your intentions. Then adjust your reality.

May Allaah make Ramadan a blessed means by which we attain His pleasure and forgiveness, and a source of positive change in the lives of each and all of us. Ameen!

Self reproach during Ramadan

The one who ponders upon the essence of this life, will realize that its pleasure is nothing but a test and that it is continuous suffering and grief. People are always wondering what will happen to them next and thus live a life of uncertainty.

The one who becomes inclined towards it will continually feel insecure and it will result in his humiliation … it will betray anyone who places his trust in it … it will forsake anyone who relies upon it … it will turn down anyone who seeks its support … it will sadden anyone who rejoices for possessing it.

The one who is heedless will lose his time in vain, and will regret it later on. What is more sorrowful than one whose own life becomes a witness against him? What could be worse than the one whose days have recorded in them deeds that would lead to his misery and punishment?

Do we ever think about death and its agonies? How severe are its sufferings? How scary is the moment of the departure of the soul? It was said that death is more difficult than being hit with the sword, being sliced by a saw and being cut into pieces by metal clippers.

O you deceived with this life!

Remember death and its bitterness … death does not fear anyone … death does not skip anyone … it does not feel merciful towards the one whose time has come. Allaah Says (what means): “Every soul will taste death” [Quran 3 185].

Remember that there is no difference between young and old, eminent and humble or rich and poor.
Remember that all people will lie in a whole of dust … their company are worms … they will all be questioned by the two angels Munkar and Nakeer.

Remember that all people will have the grave as the transit place in their journey towards the Hereafter to the final destination of Hell or Paradise.

Remember that the one who realizes these facts should have nothing else busying his mind and occupying his thinking except how he should prepare for this moment and how to attain the provisions to take on this journey.

Remember the darkness of the grave … Remember the narrowness of the grave … Remember the lonesomeness of the grave.

Remember that this narrow dark place will contain the ruins of all the dead, whether kings or slaves … it is either a sample of Paradise or a pit of Fire.

How strange is the case of the disobedient people who realize that they are heading towards their graves yet remain heedless?

No one will be of any help … no companion … no wife … no children … no friends … no relatives. The only companion is ones deeds.

Imagine yourself three days after your death in your grave … you will be left lying in dust without any of your beloved ones around, and nothing can be of any assistance except your good deeds … what would you find awaiting you? Send them forth so that you can find them then, when you need them the most.

Remember the time when the trumpet will be blown.

Remember the time of resurrection.

Remember the time when everyone’s record of deeds will be exposed.

Remember the time when you stand in front of Allaah for account; when He will ask you about every minor and major act.

Remember the time when the precise measuring scale will weigh your deeds.

Remember the time when you will have to pass over the Siraat (i.e. the bridge over Hellfire).

Remember that on that day, the outcome will be either Hell or Paradise … so you chose for yourself.

Imagine yourself being resurrected astonished with the terrifying scene … people all around you terrified … they stand with humility and fear awaiting to find out their destiny … standing for a long day; a day as long as fifty thousand years … they will be suffering the heat of the sun that will be commanded to draw closer to people … everyone around you naked … how will your situation be?

Allaah Says (what means): “On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation. And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst” [Quran 19: 85-86].

At that time, all that was from the knowledge of the unseen and unknown will become reality, and people will be in two groups, those destined to Paradise, and those destined to Hell.

Did you ever sit alone and reproach yourself for what you have said and done? Did you ever try to count your sins and shortcomings? Did you ever reflect on the way you perform your acts of worship to see how much of it is mixed with showing off? How can you feel at ease whilst your road to the Hereafter is surrounded with danger? How will your situation be when you are brought forth to meet Allaah with all these sins and shortcomings?

Allaah Says (what means): “O you who have believed, fear Allaah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow — and fear Allaah. Indeed, Allaah is Acquainted with what you do.” [Quran 59: 18]

Abu Barzah  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him reported that the Messenger of Allaah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Man's feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection before he is asked about his life, how did he consume it, his knowledge, what did he do with it, his wealth, how did he earn it and how did he dispose of it, and about his body, how did he wear it out.” [At-Tirmithi].

‘Umar  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him said: “Call yourself to account, before you are called to account; weigh your deeds before it gets weighed for you; and prepare yourselves for the great exhibition.”

Invest in your health before you become ill … Invest in your free time before you become busy … Invest in your wealth before you become poor … Invest in your life before you die … live in this life as if a stranger who is passing by a town … when you wake up in the morning do not expect to live until the evening … if you live until the evening do not expect to wake up in the morning.

This great month of Ramadan is approaching you after a long wait; it came bringing all kinds of good and glad tidings; during it mercy descends and sins are forgiven and pardon is granted; the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of the Hellfire are sealed and the devils are chained … so will you utilize this opportunity and take advantage of this great chance?

Take advantage of this month to hold yourself to account and practice self reproach … it is the right time for one to rectify the ruined relation with his Lord and open a new page in his life … it is a good chance to return to Allaah and rush towards Him.

You must sit with yourself in seclusion every once in a while and reproach yourself and hold yourself to account … Start with the obligatory matters and make up the shortage in them … Refrain from any sin you are committing, like severing ties with kinfolk, lying, backbiting, gazing at things that are forbidden, and so forth … Sincerely repent from all the sins you have committed, and express your regret to your Lord and supplicate for His forgiveness and weep … Rush to performing good deeds to make up for what you have missed out on.

Before doing anything hold yourself to account as to why do you want to do it and what do you intend? For whose sake will you do it? How will you do it and will it be in accordance to the way of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) or not? What will you benefit from doing it?

When one asks himself these questions, he will always be alert and controlling himself … this is the only way towards winning the eternal happiness and success, as Allaah Says (what means): “And whoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger and fears Allaah and is conscious of Him — it is those who are the Successful.” [Quran 24: 52]

Ramadan: A portrait of self-reflection

With Ramadan approaching, many of us eagerly look forward to the impending celebratory meals and visits with family and friends, breaking fast at the Masjid (mosque), and of course the ‘Eed celebration that closes this great month.

We rush about making careful preparations by cleaning our homes from top to bottom. Some may even decorate them for an added festive effect. We go from market to market purchasing ingredients used to create elaborate delicacies so special that we enjoy them only a couple of times during the year. We shop around trying to purchase just the right gifts for our family and friends.
With all of our preparation for the blessed month of Ramadan, we should also take the time to reflect upon where we are regarding our duties to Allaah compared with where we were this time last year. Ideally, we should be striving to be better and better each year. In order to do so, we must take an honest assessment of our shortcomings. Ramadan is a great time to really take stock of ourselves and admit any shortcomings we may have when it comes to our worship.
Abu Hurayrah  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "When Ramadan comes, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are put in chains." [An-Nasaa'i]
While every month of the year is an occasion for worship and obeying the Will of Allaah, the month of Ramadan multiplies our reward for being constant in these acts.
When you ask yourself where you are spiritually this year as Ramadan approaches compared with last year, what changes do you see? Are you satisfied? Do you think that Allaah would be pleased with your progress? Have you grown in faith, or have you fallen short in your worship? What are your personal goals for this Ramadan to attain an even higher level of faith, and earn the pleasure of Allaah? Perhaps at the close of Ramadan last year, you successfully completed reading and/or reciting the Quran. Maybe you were able to maintain an even disposition during the entire fast, taking extreme care in being patient with others. Or despite a jam-packed school or work schedule, you managed to make most of your prayers at the Masjid.
You may have ended the month last year with a stronger sense of faith, more certain in your servitude to Allaah. But what has happened in between that time to today as we await the arrival of this blessed month? Do you continue reading the Quran daily? Do you remain mindful and in control of your temper using patience in your daily interactions? Are you still making most of your prayers at the Masjid and taking care in being punctual with your prayers?
The strength of our faith goes up and down throughout our lives. The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Faith wears out in the heart of one of you just as clothes wear out, so ask Allaah to renew the faith in your hearts (i.e. strengthen it).”[Al-Haakim and At-Tabaraani]
Committing to making an effort to improve our worship can only increase our faith, the same way in which succumbing to sin diminishes it.
Self-evaluation
Ramadan is full of the mercy of Allaah and opportunities to please Him through our worship and good deeds. In looking inward recognizing our shortcomings, we should make a commitment to ourselves and Allaah to engage in such acts as worshipping in congregation, spreading the greeting of Salaam to our family, friends and neighbors, encouraging one another to continue to follow the Straight Path, enjoining that which is good and avoiding and forbidding evil.
We should strive to increase remembering Allaah, and working to overcome our desires to follow frivolous whims. We should recognize all sinful acts no matter how small and seemingly insignificant and make every effort to stop persisting in them. We must have patience for others and patience for ourselves as we immerge ourselves in this process of spiritual growth. Allaah showers us with His mercy and forgiveness during this blessed month. Those who repent in sincerity will find Allaah Most Forgiving, as He Says (what means): "And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allaah will find Allaah Forgiving and Merciful."[Quran 4:110]

Making changes for the better
If we are successful in implementing good deeds and habits of worship during Ramadan, we often find that the true test of our positive changes is in continuing to improve our faith during all of the months that follow. Ramadan is a holy month, and it can be argued that it is easier to repent and make positive changes in our worship since we are all in the midst of fasting and spending increased amounts of time with others also striving to attain the mercy of Allaah. Changes may begin small, but baby steps can make quite a difference in the end. One suggestion is to begin implementing new small acts of worship during Ramadan that you can easily continue them from now on. They can act as a protection against becoming stagnant in worship and keep faith strong:
* Try attending some Islamic classes or gatherings weekly.
* Consider joining an evening or weekend Islamic "course" or class. (i.e. Arabic, Quran recitation, etc.) Events like these surround you with like-minded people offer mental stimulation and help strengthen faith.
* Read a section of the Quran daily, ideally after Fajr. It is a stimulating, positive way to start each day.
* Institute a time each day to have a family class, where you perhaps read from a Hadeeth book at home and have a short discussion. It doesn't have to take long—you could do so after one of the prayers for about five or ten minutes each day.
* Commit to one or more days a month to involving the entire family in an act of charity such as clothing the needy, feeding the homeless, or any other kind of help. There is so much in the world that needs to be done and it is our responsibility to get out and do something about it. It reminds us to be thankful for everything Allaah has allowed us to have in this life, teach the lesson of charity to our family while bonding through performing good deeds.
These are only a few suggestions. There are many more ways of making a regular practice of incorporating worship into our lives. Regular worship guards our faith and increases it. It is important that we remember that a decrease in faith leads to neglecting our duties of worship, or becoming involved in sinful deeds. This is something that must be taken very seriously.

Moms: Feed your soul this Ramadan

For most Muslims, Ramadan is supposed to mean much more than just abstaining from food, drink and sexual intercourse. It is an opportunity to enlighten the mind and soul. With opportunities to participate in the Taraaweeh (night prayers) prayers and Iftaar (fast-breaking) meals to enjoy with family and friends, Ramadan is the highlight of the year for many Muslims. However, many busy Muslim moms find it harder and harder to keep up with demanding jobs, families and the added responsibilities of Ramadan. So, how can moms manage all this and make time for worship, spirituality and devotion?

We know that Ramadan is a training session for Muslims. It is another opportunity for us to renew good practices and develop good habits that we aim to continue until the next Ramadan. One such practice is that of making a good intention before every action. Since making the right intention is a form of worship, this is an easy way for women to worship even during their busy working days. Whether you are washing your family's breakfast dishes or giving your son a bath after a long day, making the right intention can be the difference between completing a menial task and performing an action of worship for the sake of Allaah. We should always be making and renewing intentions, but sometimes we forget. Ramadan is a great time to reawaken that practice and begin again to make proper intentions.

Prioritize or postpone responsibilities

Once we have the right intention, we can make some changes in our daily schedules to better appreciate the blessings of Ramadan. As busy, working (or working at home) moms, we must prioritize in Ramadan to determine what is more important than something else. There is only a fixed number of hours in the day, so it would be impossible to get everything done on one's list. Hence, the need to prioritize and create a short-list, at least for the month, takes precedence over trying to get absolutely everything done.

There are definitely a few tasks or responsibilities that we have during the year that we can postpone or altogether disregard during Ramadan. By eliminating something from our schedules (be it temporary), we can make time for other activities and practices that will be more beneficial for us.
During Ramadan, it is recommended to visit the Masjid, read Quran, make Thikr (remembrance of Allaah), offer additional prayers, and make supplication. If the Masjid is in need, perhaps you can tidy up the mess from the activity of the previous night; you can clean up in the kitchen or sweep the floors. Remember that no deed goes overlooked and there is rarely a better time to earn additional reward than in Ramadan.

Working women too have opportunities to forego one activity for another. Feed your soul rather than your body at break time in Ramadan. The customary lunch break is the perfect time to get out of the office to focus your energy on something other than your job. If your break is long enough, you can visit a local Masjid for a few minutes of spiritual retreat. If your break is not long enough, spend some time with an Ipod or any other device at your desk to listen to a portion of a lecture or a few minutes of some Quranic recitation.

Make some Thikr with dinner

Many women notice in Ramadan that food becomes one of the most important aspects of the month. It should not be so, but Iftaars and dinners become more and more elaborate and, in some cultures, Iftaars are equivalent to a delicious prelude to an even more complex dinner.

Muslim women must make efforts to avoid falling into this trap. Ramadan is not about the food. It is about appreciating what we have and having a conscience about what others don't have. Therefore, producing and providing gourmet meals to our friends and family is not the way of observing the blessings of this holy month. Instead, perhaps we can cook simple but ample food and distribute it at the Masjid for Iftaar.

A great dinnertime habit that we can begin (or renew) in Ramadan that can be carried through all year long is making constant Thikr. Rather than humming or talking to yourself while you are cooking all that food for the Masjid, try making Thikr. Pronouncing the Names of Allaah and invoking His blessings is one of the easiest ways for even the busiest of moms to make the most of her time in Ramadan. While stirring the pot, why not say: "Subhan Allaah", while setting the table say: "Alhamdulillaah". Once you set your mind to it, you will notice how easy it is to make Thikr at any place and time—while you are driving, while you are standing in line at the bank, while you are waiting for your car at the carwash, etc.

Supplicate while the kids are asleep

If your husband is away for Taraaweeh and you are left putting the kids to bed, take solace in the fact that you can offer Taraaweeh independently. If your kids are too young to take to the Masjid for Taraaweeh, keep them home and offer your Taraaweeh prayer alone. Just because you have matronly duties doesn't mean that you cannot fulfill your duty to Allaah.

And if you need to go to bed early, then you can rise even earlier in the morning, again while the kids are sleeping. Wake up before Fajr and take advantage of the best time of the day to offer recommended prayers. You can perform as little as two Rak'ahs or as many as twelve plus one for Witr. As you begin to appreciate the quiet pre-dawn hours, you just might make this a habit even outside of Ramadan.

One Ramadan at a time

Another way of making sure that moms can feed their souls in this blessed month is not by looking for opportunities but actually creating situations. In other words, we can make a conscious decision to do something, and then do it. For example, if you know that you have the most time to yourself during the Thuhr prayer while the kids are at school, then that is the time that you should try to read or pray or make Thikr. Of course, performing Taraaweeh is beneficial, but if that can't be done then do what you can.

Avoid feeling that if you can't do Taraaweeh at night, or you can't rise before Fajr for Tahajjud (recommended after-midnight prayer), then you have failed and can't do anything. The goal should be to adopt deeds you did not do before, and that you eventually can maintain after Ramadan. Then, even after Ramadan is long gone, the practices remain and you can compound this annually, with new acts of worship formed with each Ramadan that passes.

That’s really the whole point. If we think of Ramadan as the training session that it is, we can hone in on actions that we feel will give us the greatest reward. We can begin to perform acts of worship during this month that will enlighten us spiritually, then we should bear in mind that what we do in Ramadan can be done all yearlong. It is better to avoid that erroneous belief that Ramadan is a temporary situation and that things can `go back to normal' once it's over. Upon developing habits that are spiritually fulfilling, we should try to make the resolution to maintain them for the upcoming months and years ahead rather than desire to dump them the day after 'Eed.

Enhancing Zuhd in Ramadan

Let us welcome the blessed month of Ramadan this time with a fresh commitment to our Merciful Creator and Sustainer to reorient our lives in His way. The most salient lesson of this month of divine training for the believers is self-restraint and abstinence. As we train ourselves in abstinence from the necessities of life for part of a day through the month, we consequently strengthen our physical as well as mental abilities to abstain from not only what is illicit (haraam), but also from all that distracts us from the pursuit of Allaah's pleasure. This mental and spiritual attitude –zuhd - is a necessary weapon for us to fight off the onslaughts of materialism and snares of Satan.

What is zuhud

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him defines zuhd as: 'giving up' something for something better, while what is given up is itself of value in some way. In other words, zuhd means to give up B in return for A, either because one values A too much or values B too little in comparison. Commonly, zuhd means to refrain from an object of desire in the pursuit of a nobler objective, particularly refraining from the desire of this world and pursuing the desire of the Hereafter. He further says that the best and most perfect of zuhd is to give up everything for the sake of Allaah. The next in grade is to give up this world to seek Allaah's Paradise.

Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him defines zuhd as: "An attitude that is the opposite of being eager and concerned about the life of this world. In the Arabic language, it means abandoning a matter while despising it and belittling its significance, so that one will exchange it for what is more significant."

He  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him further says: "I heard Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him say: 'Zuhd is abandoning what does not bring about benefit in the Hereafter. Wara' is abandoning what you fear will have consequences in the Hereafter.' This statement is one of the best and most comprehensive definitions of Az-Zuhd and Al-Wara'."

Sufyaan ath-Thawry  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said: "Zuhd in this world means avoiding hopes of long life, not in wearing thick garments (unlike what some people with superficial understanding of zuhd think)."

Imaam Hassan Al-Basri  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said: "Zuhd in this world is not achieved by prohibiting the permissible, nor by giving away all of one's wealth. Rather, it means being more certain in what Allaah has in His hands than about what one has in his hands."

Enhancing Zuhd in Ramadan

The best of teachers of mankind  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The worst cavity one fills is one's belly, if you must eat make sure you full one third of your stomach with food, one third with water and leave one third for air (i.e. leave it empty.)" [At-Tirmithi]

The beloved messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) would also encourage finishing our food so nothing is left in the plate to be thrown away, and he would encourage even licking the fingers (if one ate using hands), or giving your plate to someone else to do the same.

Another narration says that one should not leave even a morsel of food to be thrown away: "for you do not know where the blessing is." [Muslim]

Compare these standards to our way of eating, particularly during Ramadan. Every known recommendation of the beloved Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) is flouted. Food is extravagant and everyone attempts to fill his or her stomach to the brim. It has become an ironical joke that people gain instead of losing weight during Ramadan. The discipline and self-restraint of the day is more than compensated for during the lavish dinners. Taraweeh prayer is difficult and often skipped as a result of extravagant engagement with food. Worse yet, the left over food is sometimes thrown away carelessly.

Ramadan is a month of zuhd, and this pattern must change if the Muslims are to ever earn zuhd and spiritual as well as physical benefit from this sacred month. Some practical tips:

Eat measured, moderate amount of healthy meals in Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftaar (evening break-fast(
When at some generous host's place or at a restaurant, do not feel obliged to finish it all, and have the packed for you to eat later. Don't be intimidated by un-Islamic pride - no morsel of food in your possession should be wasted. Food we eat is sacred in that it is given by Allaah and is full of His blessings - this is our religious value.
Invite poor people in your community to break their fast with you; their respect for food and Allaah's provisions is often a good lesson.
Remember the Prophet's advice on eating moderately - print it out and post it by your dining table if possible.
Particularly while fasting, prevent your heart from getting engaged in something of this world - food, clothes, celebrities, buildings, or people. An excellent religious teaching of some of our scholars is to cast down our eyes and say 'Subhanallaah' (perfection is for Allaah) whenever something of this world catches our fancy to the point of making us forget Allaah.
Pick out audio lectures of scholars whose speech affects your heart, or recitation of the Quran by your favorite reciters, and make it a habit to listen to them attentively and regularly while driving or at home.
Remember the Saying of Allaah (which means) "…the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children…." [Quran 57: 20]
